Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C is an early example of the ‘Classical concerto’, yet praise for this work has not been incorporated into general approaches to this subject. The Cello Concerto in C is occasionally mentioned in passing, but the overwhelming focus of the Classical concerto literature is upon Mozart’s late concertos. The following is a partial list of concertos by Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). In the Hoboken catalogue of Haydn's works, concertos for most instruments are in category VII with a different letter for each solo instrument (VIIa is for violin concertos, VIIb is for cello concertos, etc.). Joseph Haydn's Concerto No. 2 in D Major for cello and orchestra, Hob. VIIb/2, Op. 101, was composed in 1783 for Antonín Kraft, a cellist of Prince Nikolaus's Esterházy Orchestra.. The piece's authenticity was doubted for some time, and at one stage it was suggested that Kraft himself had written it, but most experts now believe that the work is indeed authentic after Haydn's autograph score

With the primary theme identified in one of Haydn’s composition books and through stylistic and contextual analysis, the Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major was another Haydn concerto that joined the classical music canon. Joseph Haydn composed Cello Concerto No.1 in C major in his youth. After its premiere at the Prague Spring International Music Festival, this piece has been regarded as one of the most significant parts of the cello repertoire ever since. Haydn uses steady entry notes several times, the latter on a very high, penetrating G. Haydn's influence of the C Major Cello Concerto has become one of the main elements of the cello repertoire, after its 20th century premiere of Milos Saddle Czechoslovak Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles McKerras on 19 May 1962.
